The careers of three police officers and their supervisor took a dive on Thursday [September 22] when reprimanding over an incident in which a 19-year-old driver was forced to swallow a gram of marijuana, led to the officers handing in their resignations and the supervisor accepting a demotion.

It was around 3:30 a.m. on the morning of [September 13], when the unidentified victim was pulled over for speeding in a 2002 BMW. Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers Michael Carnicle and Richard Pina, both rookie cops, along with veteran of the Chicago PD, Jason McFadden, discovered the narcotic. After writing up a traffic ticket, Pina and McFadden demanded that the victim eat it, as Carnicle watched on. The teenager would soon fall ill to the ingestion, and he'd report the incident the very same day. "The allegations against these former officers are compelling, appalling and extremely unprofessional," Phoenix police Chief Joe Yahner said of the incident, of which there is no recording because they were reported to have had their body cameras off. "This conduct is contrary to everything we stand for and it undermines the good actions of the men and women of the Phoenix police department."

Yahner said he was prepared to fire the trio, but that they decided on stepping down first. A spokesperson for the department said that Pina and McFadden could face charges. Lieutenant Jeff Farrior was dropped from rank for what officials report was apprehension to immediately penalize the officers.
