Vince Staples made light of Colin Kaepernick’s decision not to stand during the national anthem and suggested that the creation of a new song might help people like him be more patriotic.

“I will only accept people being angry at Kaepernick if they are also angry when people don’t sing along to Happy Birthday. Both songs about things people love. BUT, America doesn’t come with cake. So.. If you all want everyone to love & enjoy the national anthem we should start a @gofundme to get Mustard on the beat,” tweeted Staples.

The rapper touched more on those comments during an interview with Power 106’s The Cruz Show. “You don’t think that would be fire though?,” he said responding to a question about DJ Mustard producing a new national anthem. He also knocked the Star Spangled Banner. “The national anthem is weak…To be honest, I never really sung along with the national anthem in my life.”
