Heidi Russo, the birth mother of San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick came out against him on Twitter for not standing up during the national anthem in the name of justice for colored people.

“There’s ways to make change w/o disrespecting & bringing shame to the very country & family who afforded you so many blessings,” she wrote. “The path less traveled doesn’t need to be one of destruction.” Fans who supported Kaepernick’s actions blasted his mother for her comments. “Coming from the lady who dropped her kid bc he was half black and clearly does not have his # to call him,” wrote one angry fan named E. Russo fought back. “Lol, if I was so ashamed my son is half black, just 'dropped him',& am a racist, I think I would’ve chosen abortion. #besmarter.”

Other fans chimed in to knock her first statement. “Yep, standing up 4 injustice is so wrong and shameful,” wrote DrTMG. Another one knocked her for giving her son up for adoption. “I had a baby when I was a senior in high school '1990.' But I didn’t give up I did whatever it took to survive for us,” wrote Robbin. Russo responded respectfully. “PLACING my son for adoption is NOT giving up. It’s giving him the life he deserved & love beyond comprehension,” she said.
