Lil Yachty continued to defend himself against criticism over his refusal to embrace some of his most highly regarded predecessors, over the weekend, after 2016 XXL Freshman peer Anderson.Paak tweeted a message that Yachty took as a direct shot at him. “Don’t be cocky in the fact that you don’t know anything about hip hop history. Real artists are students of the game first,” .Paak wrote on Saturday, [August 27]. The tweet caught the "Lil Boat" rapper's attention, prompting him to retweet and address .Paak's comment.

“I think it’s funny how people feel like you HAVE to like something just cause everybody else does. Or like I HAVE to know something. Where in the handbook of hip hop does it say u must know this list of songs to make music,” Yachty said in response.

Lil Yachty has come under fire from various figures in the Hip Hop industry over his dismissal of "serious rap" as boring and comments he's made by which many feel he minimizes the importance of the genre's legends. On one occasion Yachty said he'd rather be rich than be Nas, and only days ago he told Billboard magazine that he could name five songs from neither 2Pac nor Biggie.
