Upon arrival in response to a 911 call he made to report an assault and car-jacking, police shot an Indianapolis man on front of his home on Tuesday, August 23. 48-year-old Carl Williams is expected to survive, but remains hospitalized in serious condition after he was shot in the abdomen, in what authorities are calling a tragic mishap.

“Our homeowner, the individual who was trying his best to protect himself and his wife from any other harm, was shot mistakenly by our officers,” Indianapolis Police Department Maj. Richard Riddle told members of the press. “This incident occurred within a few seconds, and those judgment calls are made within a few split seconds ... She was victimized, and unfortunately now, her husband was victimized as well.”

A pair of officers arrived at Williams' residence at 4:35 a.m. They observed a black car with it's headlights on and approached in order to take not of it's license plate, when the garage door began to open. According to reports the officer identified as Christopher Mills became startled when he noticed Williams holding a gun, and reacted by opening fire. They had been responding to a call reporting the theft of a black Nissan Sentra, and had the description of a "black male in a red shirt armed with a rifle" to work off of. It remains unclear as to whether Williams' clothing matched that described of the man who struck his wife, or if he lifted or moved his firearm in a threatening manner.

The culprit was reported to have struck struck Williams' wife before getting away in the vehicle. He remains on the loose.
