Chuck D called former New York City mayor Rudolf Giuliani “Adolf” in a recent interview with MSNBC’s AM Joy.

The Public Enemy rapper was discussing the Crown Heights riots in the early 1990s which occurred when an Orthodox Jewish driver killed a 7-year-old black child. The events helped get Giuliani into office. Host Joy Reid asked about the former mayor. “You mean Adolf? I mean Rudolf,” Chuck D replied. “It’s just lame to actually say, ‘I’m gonna run for something because the guy or woman that preceded me was too soft and cared about everybody.” He also criticized the former mayor for his tough policing and high arrest rate of minorities.

Chuck commented on how his music was influenced by the events. “The music spoke to the people at the time to say, ‘Stand up, be strong and be united,” he said. “Unfortunately, fear of a black community at that time was more prevalent in New York City, because everybody in New York looks at each other, goes to work together in droves. But the communication is what we asked for.”
