As Toya Wright continues to grieve the loss of her two brothers to gun violence in New Orleans, she has been able to rely on the support of ex-husband Lil Wayne, she said in a PEOPLE magazine exclusive released on Thursday, August 18. So too of course, has the couple's 17-year-old daughter Reginae, who was said to have grown up with Toya's younger brother, Ryan. "[Lil Wayne's] daughter needed him, and he was there," Wright told PEOPLE. "He calls and checks on us all the time."

Wright says that Wayne put a halt to his schedule to be by the family's side immediately after receiving news of the tragedy. According to Wright, the teenage sweethearts have remained close since their 2006 split but even were such not the case, it is more than likely that the 33-year-old rapper would still have come through, considering he and Wright raised little Ryan as their own. But if there were anything that she knew wouldn't be probable, it would have been Wayne showing up at the funeral. Aside from him having expressed being adverse to attracting media to such a sacred place, she was already aware that her ex doesn't do funerals. "He really can't handle funerals. Neither can I," said Wright. "It was so hard to see my two brothers in caskets. I had nightmares afterward. It was so hard."

Wright was hosting a party in Baton Rouge on July 31, when she got the call telling her that Ryan ["Rudy" Johnson], 24, and Joshua ["Fish" Johnson], 31, had been shot and left for dead in their car. The incident took place in New Orleans' Seventh Ward. Ryan and Joshua's funeral was held on August 5. Since saying her final goodbyes, Wright has had to cope with her emotions while moving forward with the business of her upcoming WeTV series, Marriage Boot Camp, and preparing for the impending release of her memoir next month. "Me and my daughter both wish we had one more day to say, 'I love you,'" says Wright.
