In 1981, former President Ronald Reagan was shot outside of the Washington Hilton. The man who shot Reagan, John Hinckley Jr, was caught shortly after gunning down the president but was found not guilty in 1982 by reason of insanity. Along with the president, the man shot Reagan's press secretary, a secret service agent, and a police officer. Although he wasn't convicted, Hinckley was committed to St. Elizabeths Hospital to be treated for mental health conditions, and diagnosed as having a psychotic disorder along with major depression. After spending 34 years in hospital, Hinckley has been released.

According to a proposal submitted by the hospital that Hinckley was in, he has been "in full and sustained remission" for more than 20 years. The plan also noted that the man had over 80 unsupervised family visits during his time at the hospital. There are a few conditions to Hinckley's release including him staying with his mother in Williamsburg, Virginia during the first year of his release.
