During a group conversation on MSNBC about the Republican national convention and Donald Trump's racial remarks, GOP Representative Steve King said that white people had contributed more to civilization than other 'sub-groups,' which may be a reference to organizations like #BlackLivesMatter. When Charlie Pierce of Esquire said that the Republican Party is "wired by loud, unhappy, dissatisfied white people," King disagreed. King responded by saying "This 'old white people' business does get a little tired, Charlie. I'd ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you're talking about, where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?"

When asked if he was saying those 'sub-groups' did not contribute more than white people, King quickly switched his answer and said "Than, than Western civilization itself. It's rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That's all of the Western civilization."

Chris King was recently in the news for his inclusion of the Confederate flag amongst other flags on his desk in his office. King also made a strong push earlier this year to block Harriet Tubman's placement on the $20 bill.
