Recently, Pope Francis stated that the Roman Catholic Church owes the gay community an apology.

While traveling back to Rome from Armenia, the Pope made these comments about gays, according to ABC. The pontiff feels that the church has marginalized gays and treated them wrongly. He also said the church has no right to judge them and should seek forgiveness from them and other groups it has dealt with in this manner such as women and the poor.

Although Pope Francis has held mostly to the traditional values of the Catholic Church, his approach to dealing with the gay community has been more diplomatic than other Popes in recent history. Some in the LGBT community view him as the most liberal Pope, and also the most welcoming of gays and other groups once shunned by the church. His views on these groups were revealed back in 2013 when he discussed gay people seeking out a relationship with God. “If someone is gay and searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge,” he said. He also told America Magazine in 2013 that God does not condemn those in the LGBT community.
