A gangster who founded an offshoot of the bloods on the East Coast is now on trial for allegedly ordering the murder of an Assistant D.A.’s father from his cell in a North Carolina prison.

Kelvin Melton, also known as “Godfather,” founded the United Bloods Nation, which is an East Coast entity of the California gang while serving time in prison during the 1980s, according to CBS. He is currently serving a life sentence and could face another one if he is found guilty. His plot was discovered by authorities who tapped his phone and overheard him telling someone to put a bag over Frank Janssen, the D.A.’s father’s head and wait until there was barely any air left. Once the bag was tight enough, his men were ordered by him to “do what it do,” according to Federal Prosecutor Leslie Catherine Cooley who described his conversation with jurors. “You don’t need an interpreter to understand the words of this man, ‘Dizzy,’ ‘OId Man,’” Cooley said while pointing at Melon revealing some of his other nicknames.

Melton is being charged with ordering the kidnapping of the Assistant D.A. The plan was botched by his accomplices, who ended up taking Janssen instead. During his captivity, Janssen was pistol-whipped and tortured with a stun gun. He was rescued right when the order was given by Melton to kill him and dispose of his body, according to authorities. Melton used smuggled cellphones to contact his associates. His co-defendants struck plea deals with the court to avoid the death penalty. Melton’s defense attorney Gerald Beaver told jurors the co-defendants accounts of the crime should not be taken seriously. “Simply because somebody told someone a story, it doesn’t mean it is true,” said Beaver. “Look at the witnesses’ motivations to try and please the government….Every one of this witnesses have received a plea agreement.” His trial is expected to last three weeks and is being held in federal court.
