A former Boise State football player awaits extradition back to Idaho where he will be prosecuted for biting off a piece of another man's ear, it was reported Thursday (May 26). Expelled defensive tackle, Dereck Boles, was arrested in Polk County, Florida a month after a warrant was issued for his arrest for an assault that escalated to him mutilating the victim in February. He faces charges of felony mayhem, which could subject him to a maximum punishment of 14 years in prison.

Under Idaho law, mayhem is defined as "maliciously depriv[ing] a human being of a member of his body, or disabl[ing], disfigur[ing] or render[ing] it useless". On February 12, Boles got into a fist fight at a home on E. Raintree Drive. Police were called to the scene upon word that he had lost his cool and resorted to clenching his teeth on his adversary's ear, and parting with a piece of it. Immediately after learning of his gruesome actions, he was dismissed from the team for violation of team rules. "Our coaches hold our student-athletes to high standards as representatives of our teams, the University and the community. We educate student-athletes to make good decisions and treat people with dignity and respect. this is part of our culture, and those who do not meet these standards will face consequences for their actions," the school's Athletic Director, Curt Apsey said on Thursday.

Before he was cut, Boles had upgraded from a year of red-shirting, to play in every game of the 2015 season. In a reserve role he had compiled 11 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and a sack.
