On Tuesday (May 17), Major League Baseball announced that Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor received an eight-game suspension for punching Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista on Sunday.  Odor was also fined $5,000. Bautista received a one-game ban for his actions and postgame comments.  Both Odor and Bautista appealed their discipline.

Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was suspended one game for his "aggressive actions during the incident." He will serve his suspension on Tuesday in Oakland since he does not plan to appeal.

It was also revealed that Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was suspended for three games. He had been ejected from the game along with Odor and Bautista, but later returned to the field.  Gibbons said he returned to calm the situation and protect his players. First-base coach Tim Leiper was given a one-game ban for returning to the dugout after his ejection.  Both Gibbons and Leiper were also fined undisclosed amounts.

Other players who received fines included Rangers pitchers Matt Bush, Sam Dyson (aggressive actions) and A.J Griffin (being on the field while on the DL); Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos (being on the field while on the DL); and Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar (aggressive actions).

In total, 14 players and staff were disciplined for their roles in the bench-clearing brawl that occurred at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

Things got heated after Bautista was hit by a pitch from Bush. Bautista did a hard slide at Odor’s legs in the midst of a double play at the top of the eighth inning of the Rangers' 7-6 win. Things escalated after Odor shoved Bautista then landed a hard punch to his face that sent Bautista’s sunglasses and helmet flying. Players from both teams rushed the field, resulting in all out chaos and a serious on-field brawl.

Odor said Monday that he didn't regret hitting Bautista, but that he does respect him because Bautista "plays hard."

The Rangers' series-clenching victory on Sunday was the final regular-season meeting between the two clubs. A feud had been simmering between the teams since Bautista's bat flip in last year's American League Division Series.
