Since the passing of the HB-2 law in North Carolina that does not protect people of the LGBT community, and forces transgender citizens to use public restrooms based on the gender they were assigned at birth —many artists, personalities, and athletes have boycotted the state of North Carolina. Despite the boycott from various figures, Beyoncé has continued on with her tour that recently kicked off, making a stop in Raleigh, North Carolina. The show didn’t come without a message from the superstar though, which she released through her website.

The singer published the statement on May 3, which gave the back story on the “bathroom bill,” saying “legislators returned to the state house to overrule the ordinance that would ban discrimination against LGBT people.” She also said “As The Formation World Tour makes its stop in the Tar Heel state in the midst of such a controversial time, we think it is important for us to bring attention to those who are committed to being good and carrying on the message of equality in this core of controversy.”

The singer went on to mention Equality NC, a group in North Carolina that has been lobbying for various rights. She gave background on the group’s activities, saying “To accomplish these goals, Equality NC tirelessly lobbies the North Carolina General Assembly, executive branch, and local governments, broadcast LGBT news, stories and content, and mobilize our communities on issues that matter, including marriage equality, parental rights, inclusive anti-bullying policies, employment discrimination, hate violence, privacy rights, sexuality education, adoption, domestic partnerships, and HIV/AIDS.”

Beyoncé now joins the ranks of Michael Jordan, Demi Lovato, and Bruce Springsteen —all of whom have made statements against the discriminatory law.
