Former Michigan State college basketball star Keith Appling was arraigned on weapons possession charges, Monday (May 4), following his arrest on the premises of a strip club in suburban Detroit on Sunday night. Despite allegations that Appling had a gun, the 24-year-old's lawyer, Cyril Hall, stated that police targeting a car Appling was in was a case of mistaken identity, and thus that the search that turned up a concealed handgun, a loaded weapon and marijuana, was illegal.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office had received a late night call from Dearborn, Michigan's Pantheon Club's security, reporting of someone pulling a gun out of the trunk of their car. Upon their arrival, former MSU standout Keith Appling is said to have moved into one of the vehicle's front seats, where he was questioned after a handgun was recovered under the seat, and taken in to custody at a Dearborn jail on Tuesday (May 3) morning. Some have claimed to have seen him with one of the guns, an AK 47, inside of the club. His next hearing was set for Friday (May 6), as he faces a 5-year felony and 3 years of misdemeanors, prosecutor Kym Worthy's office said.

The Detroit native might be known to the world for his NCAA prowess and his stint with the NBA's Orlando Magic, but for those who are from Motor City, Appling has carried notoriety since way back in his high school days, when he won the state's Mr. Basketball award at Pershing HS.  Over the course of Appling's 35 games in the Development League this past season, he has averaged 19 points and 5.3 assists per game.
