Last Saturday (April 23rd), Beyoncé dropped her high anticipated sixth studio album, Lemonade, along with a visual companion that premiered on HBO. The album quickly shot to the number one spot on the Billboard charts as controversy swarmed the pop star due to the solemn themes portrayed in the 60-minute special. Despite the critics, the album has sold nearly 500,000 copies in less than seven days.

During a recent radio appearance female rapper, Khia, joined the peanut gallery to share her thoughts on Lemonade. Khia is highly critical of the musical release and the negative light she believes the video casts on African Americans. The “My Neck, My Back” rapper is particularly perturbed by the images in the video for, “Sorry” saying, “Why all the videos have to be hurt and pain, showing the Black man that we ain’t sh*t and showing Black women we’re tired”.

Khia further expressed her disappointment by highlighting Serena William’s appearance and the implications of colorism in the video. The rapper criticizes the tennis champion for twerking in the video saying “Serena twerking for Beyoncé looking like her slave”. Khia continues to remark about William’s appearance comparing Beyoncé to a slave master and appointing the inferior depiction of William’s to skin color politics. Khia scrutinizes the conflicting themes in Lemonade and questions Beyoncé’s motives in promoting Blackness while choosing to adorn accessories like Blonde wigs that are commonly associated with European standards of beauty.

Khia fumes about independence, voodoo, African ancestry, and the stereotypes she viewed in Lemonade. She ends the rant saying, “F*ck that b*tch, Beyoncé”.
