Former NFL player Will Smith was shot and killed last night (April 10) in New Orleans. The incident occurred following a traffic collision according to a report from ESPN.
According to reports, the 34 year old former Saints defensive end was shot after exchanging words with a driver of an H2 Hummer who rear ended his vehicle, causing him to hit another. Smith, who was accompanied by his wife, was shot multiple times. His wife was shot twice in the leg. Smith died at the scene while his wife was rushed to the hospital.
The family of Smith released a statement Sunday morning: "On behalf of the Smith family, we are thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers. We ask that you continue to respect the family's privacy as they grieve the loss of a devoted husband, father and friend."
The driver of the H2 Hummer, 28 year old Cardell Hayes, has been charged with second-degree murder.
