Edmund Lee, a third-grader from St. Louis, was told he wouldn't be able to return to his charter school, Gateway Science Academy after moving outside of city limits because he is black. Due to an old application stemming from a desegregation law which prevents black students from going to city schools, the 9-year-old's application was denied. While the school is open to transfer students, a legislation on school desegregation will not allow black students to participate.

Lee's mother, LaShieka White, said she was shocked to have received the news, "It was surprising to me to have on a piece of paper that he couldn't attend because he was an African American and if he was another race he could," She told the Daily News.
