NYPD Officer Peter Liang was charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of Akai Gurley, an unarmed Brooklyn man who was walking up the dimly lit staircase in a public housing unit in November 2014. Prosecutors argued that Liang was under no threat when he fired his revolver once, causing a bullet to ricochete off of a wall and hit Gurley in the chest as he entered the stairwell on the floor below. A witness said Liang did nothing to help the victim while a neighbor and friend performed CPR on the victim.

Liang now faces a maximum of fifteen years in prison, and he will be sentenced on April 14.
