The city of New York has officially made plans to honor hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc and the back to school party that birthed a new culture. 1520 Sedgwick Avenue will now be co-named "Hip-Hop Boulevard" in celebration of the Bronx's musical contributions and the "first hip-hop party" on August 11, 1973. "I'm thankful that it has evolved to a genre of music that has gained so much attention and popularity," said Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson. "We have a lot of Bronx natives who are trailblazers. In terms of affirming that The Bronx was the birthplace of hip-hop, no, I don't think we got any push back from that."

Fellow pioneer DJ Jazzy Jay had this to say about the news: "[DJ Kool Herc] is the reason why we do hip-hop in general and the official reason why hip-hop was born, so it's only fitting that it should be right there."

New York hip-hop fans would also like to include Van Duzer Street and Linden Boulevard in honor of the Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest, respectively.
