Brian Encinia, the Texas state trooper who arrested Sandra Bland, was indicted on perjury charges, as the grand jury didn't believe that Encinia's statement that he removed Bland from her car so he could conduct a safer investigation. Controversy has surrounded the case after it made national news. Bland's family contests claims made by police that she hanged herself in her cell three days after being arrested for assault on a public servant. 

After the indictment against Encinia was announced, the Texas Department of Public Safety revealed that termination proceedings against the officer would begin.
