According to several reports, NYPD shot and killed 36-year-old Miguel Espinal after the suspect allegedly led them on a chase from the Bronx through Westchester County. NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis told the New York Times that "no weapon has been recovered" from the scene of the incident.

The Times also reported that police spotted a 2009 Nissan Z driving erratically around noon on 242nd Street, and the chase ensued once the police tried to approach the vehicle. While on the Saw Mill River Parkway, the driver of the Nissan collided into several vehicles after making a 180 degree turn.

Police were able to grab 25-year-old Akeem Smith out of the car following the crash, but Espinal ran off into Tibbets Brook Park. It was in a wooded area of the park that police fired a single shot, fatally wounding Espinal.

While it's unclear who fired the fatal shot, one of the two officers on the scene, Romeo Francis, was named in a civil suit that alleged the officer used excessive force during an arrest in Queens. The officer's lawyer,  the plaintiff's lawyer, Elizabeth Crotty, told the Times, "It is an active case so I cannot comment on his direct involvement, but he was the arresting officer."
