Officer Ricardo Galvez was gunned down in a suspected botched robbery while sitting in his BMW at the Downey Police Department on Wednesday night. According to the L.A. Times, the California officer had just returned from police dog-training and he wasn't in uniform and didn't have his gun on him at the time of the shooting.

The Times revealed that another officer heard a gunshot when he was leaving his shift at the station, and when he went to investigate the situation he discovered that Galvez had been shot to death. The officer then spotted a Nissan leaving the scene and he pursued the vehicle, which turned into a chase.

After the officer caught up with the car, three suspects jumped out and the driver was arrested. The following day the two other suspects, including a 16-year-old, were arrested, and they admitted that they attempted to rob Galvez without knowing he was a police officer.

Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department revealed that the men went up to the officer's car as he pulled into the parking lot and shot him without giving him a chance to defend himself.

The L.A. County Sheriff's department is currently investigating the situation.
