Police confirmed that 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee was the intended target in a beef involving his father and a rival gang. Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters that the boy was "lured" into an alley while walking home to his grandmother's house after school.

McCarthey added, "Tyshawn Lee was murdered in probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I've witnessed in 35 years of policing. We're pretty certain that this is not an accident. He was not a bystander."

Tyshawn Lee was on his way to his grandmother's house after school when he was fatally shot, and police say they're not ruling out that the 9-year-old was targeted.

Chief of Detectives Dean Andrews revealed that Lee was hanging out with "an unknown number of individuals" when an argument broke out and shots were fired. The boy was reportedly hit several times in his torso, and he was pronounced dead at 4:39pm.

Lee's mother, Karla Lee, revealed that her son had dreams of joining the NBA, and she added, "He's a good kid. He didn't deserve that, he didn't deserve that. Emotions? They're gone. I don't have my baby no more."
