Memphis police officer Sean Bolton was gunned down Saturday night after getting into an altercation with Tremaine Wilbourn during a drug deal gone wrong.

Bolton had approached the illegally parked 2002 Mercedes Benz Wilbourn and an associate sat in Saturday night (Aug. 1), when Wilbourn got out of the vehicle and allegedly confronted him. After engaging in a physical struggle, Wilbourn pulled out a gun and shot Bolton several times, according to several sources. A witness notified police of the incident, but not before Wilbourn and the driver were able to get away. Officer Bolton later passed at a nearby hospital.

The shooting resulted in a two-day manhunt for Wilbourn, who was released on probation in July 2014 for a prior armed bank robbery. Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong called Tremaine a coward at one point, to which he responded "I want you to know that one, I'm not a cold-blooded killer. And two, I am not a coward."

Wilbourn turned himself into authorities Monday (Aug. 3) with his family and lawyers by his side around 4:50 p.m. He's currently being held on $9 million bond. According to Armstrong, "All the signs were there, that clearly demonstrated he was a violent individual."

The driver of the get-away vehicle turned himself in as well, but was released without any charges filed against him.
