Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman has escaped from prison again, leaving Mexico in a state of emergency, CNN reports.

In a press conference Sunday morning, Mexico National Security spokesman Monte Alejandro Rubido García confirmed the drug lord's escape. García explained to reporters how Chapo created a tunnel in his ventilated cell at the Altiplano maximum security prison. The tunnel was a mile long and was well lit, raising suspicions that Chapo received outside assistance in plotting his escape.

Chapo escaped prison once before in 2001 from a high-security prison in a laundry cart and was found 13 years later on a Mexican beach resort. During his trial in 2014, the kingpin stated he was a working farmer and had no recollection about his major drug empire.

As head of the most deadly drug trafficking operations, Chapo's Sinaloa cartel is reportedly responsible for the heroin epidemic in the northeastern United States and tens of thousands of deaths in Mexico. His story has been emulated in books, films and Hip Hop songs made popular by Gucci Mane, Fredo Santana and Wiz Khalifa.

Chapo was last seen heading to an area in the jail where inmates shower and wash clothes.

The Toluca International Airport was shut down and officials are currently on the hunt for the 60-year-old.
