Glastonbury Festival chief organizer Emily Eavis has received serious death threats after choosing Kanye West as the headliner for this year's festival, and she spoke to the Evening Standard about the ordeal.

"I had death threats and stuff. It was just horrible. It was just crazy. It was getting out of control. We had Time magazine, all the American news channels saying they were going to come down. This incredible onslaught worldwide."

An online petition also popped up on Change.org, which urged fans to take Kanye off the billing, but Eavis is standing by her decision to book the Chicago emcee.

"Kanye West is making the most exciting music at the moment. He is an amazing force as a performer. For us, getting the biggest star in the world was an amazing coup."

Jay Z faced similar criticism in 2008 when he was chosen as the first Hip-Hop act to headline the festival, and Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher publicly spoke out against the decision. Hov hit back at the controversy by opening with Oasis' "Wonderwall," and added the line, "That bloke from Oasis said I couldn't play guitar/Somebody should have told him I'm a f**kin' rock star."
