Legendary actor Robert De Niro gave real world advice to the graduates of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts on Friday when he joked about their degrees and pursuing their passions.

According to CNN, the actor spoke to hundreds of graduates and reflected on the importance of chasing your passion, even if that means a job will take more work than a fellow student with a dentistry or accounting degree.

"You discovered a talent, developed an ambition and recognized your passion. When you feel that, you can't fight it — you just go with it," he explained. "When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense. You aren't just following dreams, you're reaching for your destiny. ... You're an artist — yeah, you're f—d. The good news is that's not a bad place to start."

The 71-year-old also told the students they would face rejection at a deeper level because their passions are closer to their hearts. He also joked about other graduates with English and Teaching degrees.

"Now that you've made your choice — or, rather, succumbed to it — your path is clear," he said. "Not easy, but clear. You have to keep working, it's that simple. You got through Tisch, that's a big deal. Or, to put it another way, you got through Tisch? Big deal!"

The New York native also told the students he shares the same advice with his six children."The Family" actor isn't the only celeb to speak during the graduation season. Common, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell and Denzel Washington have inspired students with their words of encouragement.
