After an agonizing wait, Michael Sam has made history as the first openly gay NFL player.

According to the New York Post, Sam was chosen in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams.

Sam played for Missouri State and came out to the nation earlier this year before the NFL Scouting Combine. Sam was also the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Many people were surprised that he ended up in the lower ranks, but a less than stellar performance at the NFL Combine was to blame.

Sam held back tears as he received the news from the Rams. Fans gave the player a standing ovation at Madison Square Garden and the Gym Bar, an openly gay sports bar in California.

Sam currently has an endorsement deal with Visa, with many more on the way.
