In an interview with ESPNW's Kate Fagan, Derrick Gordon revealed that one week ago, he came out to his teammates, and is now coming out to the world, making him the first openly gay player in division 1 college basketball.

He revealed to Fagan that he decided to come out to ease the tension around him transferring from Western Kentucky to UMass after his freshman season.

"I was thinking about summer plans and just being around my teammates and how it was going to be. I just thought, "Why not now? Why not do it in the offseason when it's the perfect time to let my teammates know and everybody know my sexuality."

Gordon joins the likes of Michael Sam and Jason Collins as athletes who've recently come out as gay.
