The definition of ratchet according to Urban Dictionary is, "To act in a dysfunctional or out-of-pocket manner; unruly. Possessing little or no class."

Over the years, "ratchetivity" has become much more influential to the masses.  The transition of musical content from decades ago when the Temptations or Smokey Robinson would sing about love, we now have music being created like "Let Me Smell Yo D*ck," or "Street Anthem."

While ratchet music can carry a message within its lyrics or beat, it often centers around violence or extremely explicit sexual acts.  People judge levels of "ratchetness"  based off of various circumstances.  It could simply be the lyrics, as is the case with songs like "Smell Yo D*ck," "Fry That Chicken," and "Don't Come In Me," but they could also be judged based off of their rather negative shock value or the effect that the song has on the masses.

Ratchet music doesn't only exist in the musical underground, but has become more and more of a trend in mainstream music as well.  Songs such as Chief Keef's "Don't Like," Trinidad James' "All Gold Everything," or Juicy J's "Bandz A Make Her Dance," all carry with them varying lyrics that contain messages promoting wild behavior and less-than-productive ways of life.  Love them or hate them, ratchet songs have found a place in modern society, and they don't look like they'll be going anywhere any time soon.
