According to The National Enquirer, actor Will Smith has kept a 1989 arrest a secret for some time. The arrest stems from an argument involving Smith and a record promoter by the name of William Hendricks. Apparently, things got out of hand and Will asked his bodyguard at the time, Charles Alston, to deal with the situation.
Alston, who also goes by the name Charlie Mack, then proceeded to attack Hendricks, ultimately fracturing his left eye. The incident took place in Smith's hometown of Philadelphia and just one day after Will took home his first Grammy Award.
Will, who was only 20 at the time, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and criminal conspiracy. The charges were eventually dropped but Will had to spend a night in a Philly police station.
He maintains his innocence in the matter, and in 2005 he commented on the situation.
"It wasn't my fault. That's what they all say! But it wasn't my fault. This is back in Philly. One of my buddies beat up this dude, and I was there. That's my story and I'm sticking to it."
A source close to The National Enquirer also discussed the matter in the upcoming issue.
"It was the worst night of his life. He wants to forget it ever happened. Will had to spend a night in the cell at the West Philadelphia police station with other inmates waking him up all night long and asking for his autograph."
